After much time in a mental hospital, Elisa returns to her ancestral home, Stradbally, where she is haunted by anxiety, addiction, and a fractured mind. Under the watchful care of Mary, the loyal housekeeper, Elisa struggles to ground herself as her Doppelgänger emerges, pulling her into a surreal descent. Iconic paintings – David’s The Death of Marat, Kahlo’s The Two Fridas, Vermeer’s The Milkmaid, and Bosch’s grotesqueries – come alive in disturbing tableaux. Inspired by Poe’s “The Raven”, Joyce, Carroll, and Dostoevsky, this poetic, unsettling film blurs fantasy, delusion, beauty, and dread. Elisa in Wonderland is the 2nd feature by acclaimed artist Cléa van der Grijn, recipient of the Arts Council of Ireland Authored Works Award.
