29th Galway Film Fleadh 11th – 16th July 2017
“Southland Tales has more ideas, visual and intellectual, in a single scene than most American independent films have in their entirety.”
— New York Times
The city stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Southland Tales is an epic story, set over the course of three days, that culminates in a massive 4th of July celebration. A large ensemble cast of characters includes Boxer Santaros, an action star stricken with amnesia; Krysta Now, an adult-film star developing her own reality-television project; and Roland Taverner, a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.

Unfairly maligned upon its release 10 years ago, Southland Tales has since proven itself to be a bona fide cult classic. Falling somewhere between tent-pole sci-fi blockbuster, post-modern music video, political satire and absurdist comedy, Richard Kelly’s follow-up to Donnie Darko is a breathless mash-up of styles and genres that demands your attention. It is also, without a doubt, my favourite film
