GALWAY FILM FLEADH NAMED ONE OF MOVIEMAKER MAGAZINE’S
20 ESSENTIAL INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVALS
MovieMaker recently added the Galway Film Fleadh to its annual list of 20 Essential International Film Festivals, which celebrates festivals that serve moviemakers and audiences in some of the best destinations in the world.
MovieMaker, a film magazine and website based in Los Angeles, compiles its annual list based on surveys, filmmaker testimonials, and visits to festivals, among other factors. Key considerations include how much assistance a festival provides to traveling filmmakers; recent premieres at the festival; opportunities to meet distributors, fans, fellow filmmakers and press; and whether festivals are Academy-qualifying.
“If you have the chance to attend any of the above film festivals as a film lover, you should. (If you’ve made it into any of them as a filmmaker, hello — we’d probably love to interview you, because you’ve either made it or in the process of making it.)”, said MovieMaker editor, Tim Molloy. “We’ve especially sought out locations we believe you should visit before you die, in the hopes that a film festival will give you the perfect reason to finally book your tickets.”
Speaking about the Fleadh, MovieMaker noted that,
“[The Fleadh] is located in a dreamy, bohemian slice of heaven on Ireland’s west coast. Galway rejects pretense and stuffiness in favor of a passionate embrace of cinema. It goes hard for Ireland, to be sure — last year’s film festival included a screening of Showtime’s Sinéad OʼConnor doc, Nothing Compares, as well as a cavalcade of Irish films, especially by rising filmmakers. But its international outlook was obvious in events like an acting masterclass with Vicky Krieps, and a directing masterclass with Mike Newell…”
Galway Film Fleadh’s Head Of Programming, Maeve McGrath on the announcement, noted that,
