In the summer of 1920, the War of Independence was brought to an abrupt end in Templemore, Co. Tipperary when pilgrims rushed to the town on hearing of statues of the Virgin Mary weeping blood from the eyes! The statues were believed to have curative powers, and their unassuming owner, teenager Jimmy Walsh, was now effecting cures for the throngs of pilgrims flooding to Templemore. Such was the clamour in the town that the RIC were confined to barracks, the IRA volunteers stopped fighting and the church were deeply suspicious of the vast sums of money being made by Walsh. But the local IRA commander, Jimmy Leahy, had no time for the boy Walsh who locals were now calling ‘the Saint’. He planned a deadly ambush on the pilgrim route that was sure to disperse the crowds, and took young Walsh in for questioning...
