Galway Film Fleadh Pays Tribute to the Vision of Polish Cinema | 27.06.07

Each year the Galway Film Fleadh screens a national strand and this year’s focus country is Poland. By screening a snap shot of the best in film in Poland from the 1950’s, the Galway Film Fleadh hopes to reach out to the Polish community in Ireland and is encouraging all Polish people living in Galway and in Ireland to make the Galway Film Fleadh as much their festival as it is an Irish festival.

Felim McDermott, Galway Film Fleadh Festival Programmer said

“It has always been a key objective of the Fleadh to reach new strands of our audience. In this sense, we are very pleased that this year’s national cinema focus is Poland. We want to welcome our local Polish audience to Galway, and give them a sense of ownership and representation at the Fleadh. It is also a fantastic opportunity to revisit the masters, including Polanski, Kieslowski, Wajda.”

Poland has a rich tradition in filmmaking and few other national cinemas have demonstrated such moral and ethical concerns as Polish films. Throughout the course of the week of the Fleadh, the festival will screen the following eight Polish films.

Retrieval
Directed by Slawomir Fabicki | Poland | 2006

Retrieval is a hard hitting and intense story of a 19 year old who in his fight to support the woman in his life and her child is forced into a world of evil. The more he fights for a better life the lower he himself falls. How much will he have to sacrifice to free himself from a world of evil?

Photographer
Directed by Dariusz Jablonski | Poland | 1998
The picture of Ghetto life contained in the colour slides of Lodz Ghetto’s chief accountant is the basis for Photographer, a film about the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of the German accountant. The colourful world of the slides is set against vivid recollections of Arnold Mostowicz, a man who witnessed the Holocaust as a Jewish doctor in Ghetto.

The Double Life of Veronique
Directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski | 1991
The Double Life of Veronique features two women who lead totally separate lives in France and in Poland, one called Veronique and one called Weronika. Despite their different backgrounds, the two share the same likes and foibles and both have an extraordinary musical talent. Unfortunately, each girl suffers from the same, barely detectable cardiac malformation.

Escape from the “Liberty” Cinema
Directed by Wojciech Marczewski | 1990
The life of a film censor in the city of Lodz is thrown into turmoil when the characters in a melodrama revolt and refuse to speak their lines. The film is a reckoning with the often absurd realities of life in the Polish People’s Republic.

Sexmission
Directed by Juliusz Machulski | Poland | 1984
The film tells the story of two men who take part in a medical experiment and agree to hibernate for three years. The men are eventually found and brought back to life, to a new world which believes that there is no role for men in humanity’s progress. The men plot their escape from the underground civilisation only to find that this new brave world is not all it seems to be.

Camouflage
Directed by Krzysztof Zanussi | Poland | 1977
Set in a summer camp for linguistics students, Camouflage centres on the conflict between two members of the academic staff, an idealistic 26 year old and a world weary and cynical older colleague.

Knife in the Water
Directed by Roman Polanski | Poland | 1962
The film portrays Andrzej and Krystyna who are driving to a lake to go sailing when they nearly hit a hitchhiker. Andrzej invites the young man to spend the afternoon sailing with them. Tensions begin to simmer between Andrzej and the hitchhiker as they both vie for attentions of Andrzej young wife. Knife in the Water was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 1963 Academy Awards.

Ashes and Diamonds
Directed by Andrzej Wajda | Poland | 1958
To the rhythms of tangos and foxtrots, Maciek Chelmicki searches for an answer, how to live, how to rid himself of the suffocating burden of his past. He tries to solve the eternal dilemma of a soldier: to obey or to think.
