Aniar is a terroir based restaurant located in Galway’s West End. The word terroir is usually associated with wine-making: the combination of factors, including soil, climate, and environment, that gives a wine its distinctive character. In the case of our restaurant, we use the word in order to describe the way in which our food comes from the specific place that is Galway and the west of Ireland. We hope to reveal the distinct and various food stuffs that make up our particular landscape, through our farms, the wildlands and the shores that surround us. The natural course of the seasons will dictate our ever-changing and evolving menu.

Owned and operated by JP McMahon and Drigín Gaffey, who also own Cava Bodega and EAT Gastropub, Aniar was awarded a Michelin Star for 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. This supreme culinary achievement recognises the restaurant’s effort to pursue innovation through the prism of traditional techniques of preservation.

Our philosophy here is only to use ingredients that are from the west of Ireland. This isn’t easy as we do not allow ourselves to use spices, so we have to go out and find flavours from other places. The same goes for the likes of lemons and olive oil, so it’s a challenge. It is why foraging became a bit of a thing for us. Otherwise, you’re just importing things from all around the world, which is not much of a challenge at all.

If you limit the palate of your ingredients, you force yourself to be more creative with that, you force yourself to find different flavours and different textures when creating a dish. There are different flavours out there in nature in the west of Ireland, such as elderflowers, wild garlic seeds and pickled roses, which we use in our savoury dishes. We use a lot of sea vegetables as well, which are a bit more durable. We’re constantly having to change our menu, because we have a limited amount of things we can use.

A family-run restaurant based on Quay Street . As a family we have lived on Quay street since 1902 and have a long history of looking after customers with Martine having worked in Nanny Mac’s (Margaret McDonagh) fish shop across the road (McDonagh’s Seafood Bar) at a very young age. This tradition was passed on to my brother and I, as we too worked with our mother in her restaurant preparing and  serving food.

Our family tradition and Galway’s Great trading ties with other countries have seeped into the bones of our restaurant and greatly influence everything we do. We believe in local Irish produce prepared simply using traditional and modern techniques from home and around the world.

Customer service is an inherited trait that we pass on to our team in the restaurant and we strive to make every customer feel as welcomed as Nanny Mac did all those years ago.

We’ve put a lot of love and effort into creating McGinn’s and we really hope you get to enjoy the fruits of our hard work. The reclaimed interior and our wood fired pizza oven took a lot of graft but it has all paid off.

We had a blast on opening night and every night since… come and see something just a little bit different right in the heart of Galway city. We think you’ll love it!

Great Drinks
We’ve got whiskeys, gins, craft beers and more. We have 19 draught taps to quench that mighty thirst of yours. We are loving McGinn’s cocktails too so get on down and try some for yourself.

Great Food
McGinn’s is most proud of its Wood Fired Pizzas. But don’t be fooled – we got a lot more than that. We have Granny McGinn’s famous brekkie every morning as well as tasty lunches and wood fired snacks all day.

Great Atmosphere
We have a really cool reclaimed interior with furnishings from just about every corner of the globe. We’ve got the pizzas, the beers, the cocktails, the sports and more… all we need now is you!

Fáilte & Welcome to The Kings Head – the old pub with new ideas on food. The Kings Head is connected to The Kings Head Bistro and we like to use that to our full advantage. In actual fact you could say we steal their best bits – their desserts, their chowder & their homemade brown bread. For other stuff we tend not to stray very far – our sandwich bread & ciabattas come from Griffins Bakery next door, sausages from Colleran’s Butchers down the street, beer for our fish batter from Galway Hooker beer. Our Blaas, however, do come from Waterford. Other notes on ingredients – we only use free range eggs, our beef is always Irish, seaweed comes from Westport, smoked salmon from the Burren, and fish & vegetables as local as we can find them.

In other words, pub food, only better! Ag freastal ort le bia folláin, úr agus de dhéantús baile.

Opening Hours: Sunday 11.30am-10pm / Monday – Saturday 10.30am-10pm
