The Student Showcase is a programme of films produced, directed, acted and animated by Irish students from educational institutions and screen training bodies from Ireland and the UK. This non-competitive category contains a mix of documentary, live action drama and animation.

This programme of shorts showcases film from the west of Ireland. This non-competitive category contains a mix of documentary, live action drama and animation. This programme features work from debut filmmakers and more established directors.

New Irish Shorts 1 // Thursday July 7th // Town Hall Theatre // 10.30a.m.

The first in our series of live action drama programmes features mixed-themed shorts which highlight the variety in Irish filmmaking today. The films range from traditional narratives to contemporary dance to the supernatural.

Life is a journey from childhood to old age, and this programme of six short films takes us through the struggles that come with each stage. This programme features work from debut filmmakers and more established directors.

Little Cinema Showcase // Thursday July 7th // Nun’s Island Theatre // 7p.m.

The Little Cinema is a monthly showcase of the best short films, music videos and documentaries being made in Galway and beyond. Set up to act as “an open mic” for filmmakers, all levels of filmmaker and all genres of film are welcome.

This special screening at the Galway Film Fleadh will feature some of the best submissions to be screened at the Little Cinema over the previous 12 months.

Human Rights Short Docs // Friday July 8th // Town Hall Theatre // 10a.m.

Our Human Rights strand of short documentaries features films from conflict zones, border crossings and refugee camps. A collection of stories from those on the frontline as they fight for freedom, dignity and a normal life.

New Irish Shorts 4 // Friday July 8th // Town Hall Theatre // 12.00p.m.

A collection of shorts which explore relationships in their many forms: parents and children, school-time camaraderies, star-crossed lovers. From the formation of lifelong bonds to heart-crushing departures, we witness how a single situation can entirely change a perspective.

Creative England Showcase // Friday July 8th // Cinemobile // 4.15p.m.

This year we are expanding our borders with a programme of shorts from England. This non-competitive selection of live action drama shorts was produced under Creative England schemes, including Emerging Talent, iShorts 2 and Funny Girls. This programme features work from debut filmmakers and more established directors.

Programme 5 provides a platform for six diverse shorts. From the comical to the unfortunate, we explore why some conversations are necessary and why some things are better left unsaid. This programme features work from debut filmmakers and more established directors.

This selection of five varied shorts shows how we can find ourselves trapped in unescapable situations – be it in our own home, a traffic jam or even someone else’s body. Here, we follow the struggles to break out. This programme features work from debut filmmakers and more established directors.

After ’16 // Saturday July 9th // Radisson BLU Hotel // 6p.m.

After ’16 is a creative response by Irish filmmakers to the events of Easter 1916. This collection of nine short films is a mixture of live action, animation and documentary, telling stories from the eve of the Rising all the way to the Troubles in 1970s Northern Ireland and beyond.

From the artist’s den, to the wrestling ring, to traditional crafts, to contemporary dance, to modern day internet sensations, our documentary strand highlights the diversity of human life on this island. This programme showcases work from debut filmmakers to more established directors.

New Irish Shorts 8 // IFB Animation Framework Premieres // Sunday July 10th // Town Hall Theatre // 12.00p.m.

Programme 8 celebrates the vibrant animation industry in Ireland today, and includes the world premiere screenings of short animations produced under Bord Scannán na hÉireann/Irish Film Board’s Frameworks scheme. This scheme is co-funded by BSÉ/IFB, RTÉ and The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon.

One Minute Film Festival // Sunday July 10th // Town Hall Studio // 4.30p.m.

Galway City of Film in partnership with Galway Film Centre and the Galway Film Fleadh are delighted to announce the return of The One Minute Film Festival. 30 one-minute films have been selected from both experienced and first-time filmmakers with all genres covered including comedy, drama, documentary, art-house and animation. Awards will be presented to the top three selected films. These super short films pack a punch proving that a really great story can be told in just one minute!
