Have a fling at the fleadh: free outdoor screenings to return to Eyre Square

The centre of Galway will be abuzz this week as outdoor cinema courtesy of the Galway Film Fleadh returns to Eyre Square. Festival organisers are encouraging people to avail of the free screenings throughout the Fleadh as much loved films such as When Harry Met Sally, Calamity Jane, Bugsy Malone, Brief Encounter and Carrie will come to live on the big screen.

Miriam Allen, Managing Director of the Galway Film Fleadh said

“ I encourage people to head to Eyre Square, to sit back, relax and enjoy the unique atmosphere that makes outdoor screenings so special. Friday 13 will see the screening of Carrie, a must for all lovers of horror while for the romantics at heart When Harry Met Sally will go down like a treat on Saturday evening.”

The running order of the films is as follows:

Brief Encounter 1945 | Thursday 12th July 2pm
Brief Encounter is probably one of the finest romances made by the English film industry. The story line is simple, of two people thrown together by a chance meeting, helpless in the face of their emotions but redeemed by their moral courage.

A married woman who meets a stranger and falls in love, belies the complexity of the emotions involved. It ends poignantly, as both parties realise that their feelings have been overshadowed by the social impossibility of their situation. Over the years few films have equalled the passion and realism of Brief Encounter.

Oklahoma! 1955 | Friday Friday 13th July 2pm

One of the most celebrated and well loved Musicals of all time. Oklahoma tells the story of a couple of young cowboys and their attempts to win the hearts of their sweethearts in the Oklahoma territory at the turn of the century… despite the interference of an evil ranch hand and a roaming peddler.

The joyous celebration of frontier life combines tender romance and violent passion in the Oklahoma Territory of the 1900’s with a timeless score filled with unforgettable songs, such as “ Oh What a Beautiful Morning”, “ The Surrey with the Fringe On Top”, “ People Will Say We’re in Love” and “Oklahoma”

Carrie 1976 | Friday 13th July 10.30pm

Carrie White is a shy young girl who doesn't make friends easily. Her classmates constantly taunt and bully her but one of them takes pity on her and gets Tommy Ross, her boyfriend and class hunk, to invite Carrie to the senior prom. Meanwhile another is not as forgiving, planning a horrible prank to embarrass Carrie in front of the whole school. What she doesn't realise is that Carrie is ... different… and you really don't want to get her angry.

Based on the novel by Stephen King, Carrie is the story of a young girl who has the power to move objects by the force of her mind. The school wallflower and the brunt of her classmates jokes, Carrie’s revenge is the focus of this stylish and tense horror film.

Calamity Jane 1953 | Saturday 14th July 2pm
Doris Day and Howard Keel fuss, feud and fall in love in the epic film Calamity Jane.

Doris Day stars in this western musical comedy as the heroic female legend herself.
At first curvaceous Calamity is too busy fighting Indians and cracking a whip to pay mind to girlie things such as dresses and perfume. Her whole life changes after she brings an aspiring actress (Katie Brown) to town. Through their friendship she learns to act like a lady and suddenly realises she's in love with her best friend, Wild Bill Hancock.

Wild Bill is too busy wooing the dainty chanteuse to give a hoot about a hot headed tomboy. However things change in rooting, tooting hooting way when each becomes love’s target.

When Harry Met Sally 1989 | Saturday 14th July 10pm

Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) meet when she gives him a ride to New York after they both graduate from the University of Chicago. The film jumps through their lives as they both search for love, but fail, bumping into each other time and time again. Finally a close friendship blooms between them, and they both like having a friend of the opposite sex. But then they are confronted with the problem:

"Can a man and woman be friends, without sex getting in the way?"

Eleven years after they first met, they are still no closer to the answer. Will these two best friends ever accept that they are meant for each other or will they continue to deny the attraction that’s existed since the first moment when Harry met Sally.

Bugsy Malone 1976 | Sunday 15th July 2pm
Bugsy Malone is a gangster movie where all the gangsters are children. Instead of bullets they use "splurge guns" that cover the victim in cream. The story tells of the rise of "Bugsy Malone" and the battle for power between "Fat Sam" and "Dandy Dan".

New York, 1929. A war rages between two rival gangsters, Fat Sam and Dandy Dan. Dan is in possession of a new and deadly weapon, the dreaded “splurge gun”. As the custard pies fly, Bugsy Malone, an all- round nice guy, falls for Blousey Brown, a singer at Fat Sam’s speakeasy. His designs on her are disrupted by the seductive songstress Tallulah who wants Bugsy for herself.
